NHRA history: The 1950s

As the National Hot Rod Association â" the NHRA â" celebrates its 60th anniversary, letâs take a look back at the origins of designed drag racingâs early years. In this feature â" the 1940s and 1950s.
In 1947, sap Parks, who proven expeditionary tanks for General Motors, helped organize the Southern California Timing Association. The prototypal SCTA âSpeed Weekâ took locate at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1949, where racers ran against a stop check to attain the fastest speeds possible.
The Santa Ana Drags began in 1950 at an installation in Southern California. In 1951, Parks became editor of Hot Rod magazine, and from his position was healthy to create the NHRA, creating âorder from chaosâ with rules and country standards.
The prototypal authorised NHRA vie was held in Apr 1953 in the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona, California; that road is today Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, host of the season-opening and season-ending races.
